Perform a real diagnostic process
The GMO detection kit uses PCR and DNA electrophoresis to test for the presence of two DNA sequences associated with GMOs:
- the 35S promoter of the cauliflower mosaic virus
- the terminator of the nopaline synthase gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
These DNA sequences are present in over 85% of genetically modified crops whose distribution is authorized worldwide.
Students engage in a comprehensive investigation during which they extract DNA from samples of different foods, amplify the DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and use agarose gel electrophoresis to identify the presence or absence of amplified GMO sequences.
Lab Duration: 3 sessions of 45 minutes each
Format for 32 students: 8 stations (4 students per station)
Storage Duration: 12 months
The kit consists of:
- Non-GMO certified food control from Bio-Rad
- 20 ml InstaGeneâ„¢ Matrix
- 500 µl GMO positive control DNA
- 1.2 ml PCR master mix (Taq DNA polymerase, dNTPs, buffers)
- 15 µl GMO primers (red)
- 15 µl Plant PSII primers (green)
- 200 µl Molecular weight marker
- 1 ml Orange G loading dye
- 20 Disposable plastic transfer pipettes
- 60 Test tubes, 1.5 ml
- 50 Screw cap tubes, 1.5 ml
- 50 PCR tubes, 0.2 ml
- 50 PCR tube adapters without caps, 1.5 ml
- 8 Foam microtube rack
- 1 Instruction manual
