Studying the Astronomical Telescope in Practical Work

The astronomical telescope, also called the Keplerian telescope, is an optical instrument that increases the apparent size and brightness of celestial objects during observation. It concretely illustrates the fundamental principles of geometric optics applied to astronomy.

This device consists of a combination of two converging lenses: a long focal length objective lens and a shorter focal length eyepiece. Since it is an afocal system, the image focus of the objective coincides with the image focus of the eyepiece. This configuration facilitates understanding the role of each lens and the formation of the observed image.

Offered on a Basix optical bench, this setup ensures precise alignment of the optical elements, simplifying classroom handling. It is perfectly suited to high school physics curricula, particularly for specialized teaching in the final year, where studying the astronomical telescope serves as a concrete example linking theory and experimentation.
