The main advantage of this model is its educational value. It allows students to understand the different parts of an Optical Telecommunication (from signal transmission to reception, including their encoding on an optical carrier or their transport in an optical fiber). More than fifteen hours of possible experiments during which users can study each part separately (modulation by electro-optic effect, fiber coupler, multiplexing and demultiplexing, ...) but also train in optical alignment techniques and fiber injection. This product was developed in collaboration with LPro Télécom and the XLIM Institute in Limoges. Topics covered: - Direct modulation of a beam by a laser diode - Indirect modulation of a laser beam by electro-optic effect (Pockels effect), light polarization - Injection and transport of a signal in an optical fiber, fiber coupler - Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), demultiplexing - Demodulation, optical transmission of video and audio signals Principles and objectives: Wavelength division multiplexing consists of transmitting several channels at different wavelengths in the same conduit, an optical fiber, each carrying information. The modulated channels are multiplexed at the emission and demultiplexed before detection. Wavelength division multiplexing allows for a higher data rate to be carried over an equivalent line fiber than a transmission system transporting only one channel. The main objective of this lab session is to address and study the different parts of an optical telecommunication link: from encoding a signal on an optical carrier to its reception, including its transport and detection.
