This device allows distance measurements using the parallax method.
The sighting system is very simple, and its operation is based on the law of rectilinear propagation of light. It involves aiming successively at a distant object O at 2 different locations A and B, thus forming the base of a right triangle OAB at A. The measurement of the angle allows for the calculation of the tangent. Knowing the length of the base, it is sufficient to calculate the distance to the object.
The device is equipped with a rotating cradle, linked to the reading vernier, to be completed with various optional accessories:
- a simple sighting device,
- a reticle sighting scope (5 x 24) or a target for measuring long distances outdoors.
The results are more precise when the base of the right triangle is large. The graduated plate is therefore compatible with different supports that can be used as a base depending on the distance to be measured:
- graduated square rod mounted on a Modumontage® support,
- 2 m optical bench,
- camera tripod.
