With the PCR PV92 computer kit, your students use real forensic techniques to extract DNA from hair or skin cells. Principle: In this activity, students search for a specific Alu repeat (a 300 base pair repetitive DNA sequence) in a specific region called PV92 on chromosome 16. During evolution, up to 1 million copies of the Alu repeat have randomly inserted into the human genome. Some of us carry an Alu insertion, others do not. These genotype variations among individuals are inherited - and constitute the raw material for genetic diversity and evolution. These subtle variations in our DNA are evidence of our ancestry and form the basis of personal identification through genetic fingerprints.
