Aconductivitymeter is an instrument used to measure the electrical conductivity of a solution. Conductivity expresses a solution’s ability to conduct electricity, which is directly related to the concentration and nature of the dissolved ions present. The more mobile ions a solution contains, the higher its conductivity.
How does it work?
A conductivity meter measures conductivity by sending an electrical current through the solution and determining its electrical resistance. In practice, the device applies a voltage to a conductivity probe composed of two (sometimes four) electrodes immersed in the solution. The speed and ease with which ions move between the electrodes determine the electrical resistance. The more conductive the solution is, the lower the resistance. Conductance (measured in Siemens) is the inverse of resistance and is used to calculate conductivity, adjusted according to the geometry of the measuring cell.
Conductivity meters are commonly used in laboratories in fields such as chemistry, pharmaceuticals, food science, and any domain involving water analysis. The most frequent application is assessing the purity and concentration of water.
Tip: Before each use, the device must be calibrated with a standard solution of known conductivity to ensure measurement accuracy.
