A Bunsen burner combines multiple applications: heating, sterilization, and combustion. Primarily used for heating substances in test tubes, beakers, or flasks, it is also useful for sterilizing small equipment such as tongs. Additionally, it can be used for combustion experiments, analyzing combustion products.
The heat output of a Bunsen burner is adjustable, allowing for different heating intensities, from gentle to strong. There are two types of flames:
Yellow flame: Produced with limited air supply. It is cooler and less efficient for most laboratory heating applications.
Blue flame: Produced with full air supply, generating a hotter, cleaner flame. This is the preferred flame for most heating tasks.
The Bunsenburner remains an essential tool in scientific laboratories. Despite the availability of alternative technologies such as electric burners, its efficiency and ability to provide a direct heat source make it a valuable and widely used piece of equipment. Several fuel options are available to suit different setups: butane/propane, natural gas, or multi-gas compatibility.
