The selection of test cards is based on film technology:
Depending on the type of solvent used in the paint formula, an application card must be more or less resistant to the solvent. The type of resin requires different types of solvents, and depending on the polarity of the solvent, organic ingredients will be more or less activated. Therefore, BYK-Gardner offers two ranges of application and contrast cards (varnished and laminated)

Varnished Byko-charts:

■ Application cards with a varnished finish are ideal for a wide range of paint systems: aqueous or solvent-based technologies
■ Paper guaranteed non-fluorescent in compliance with the standard ASTM D 344
■ Repeatable color and gloss - batch after batch
■ Superior adhesion characteristics, especially with latex paints
■ Robust design (14 mils thick) to prevent card deformation during paint application.
■ The application card box is packaged in low-permeability plastic to prevent moisture absorption during shipping and storage.
■ Lot numbers are printed on all cards

Spreading cards or surface yield cards are made to visually evaluate the covering power of a product. Checkerboard or diagonal stripe cards have a strong visual impact and highlight variations in film opacity.
