TP - Acquisition of bipedalism and belonging to the genus Homo
Excerpt from the syllabus:
Senior year in Science track: Earth in the universe, life, the evolution of living beings: genetics and evolution. A look at the evolution of Man.
Scientific issue:
The human lineage is the evolutionary history of Hominins from the most recent common ancestor of Man and Chimpanzee.
Many questions about its structure remain, especially regarding the genus Homo. Indeed, assigning a fossil to a particular species is always subject to caution (inapplicable interbreeding criterion, discovery of fragmentary bones, chance preservation of remains, etc.).
How to determine the classification of a fossil within the genus Homo?
Operational procedure:
The genus Homo includes modern Man and some fossils. Almost exclusive bipedalism is one of the characteristics specific to this genus.
Comparative study of skulls allows, in particular, to locate the occipital hole and establish a link between its location and the mode of locomotion.
