Digital Oscilloscope

A digital oscilloscope is an essential instrument for easily analyzing an electrical signal and displaying it on a screen. It allows users to debug, test, verify, and rapidly analyze multiple signal properties such as amplitude, frequency, and distortion. Unlike an analog oscilloscope, a digital oscilloscope samples the original analog waveform, converts the result into numerical data, and stores it in digital format. It has rapidly evolved thanks to continuously advancing technologies, making it an indispensable tool for anyone designing, testing, or repairing electronic equipment.

What is the difference between a DSO and an MSO?

  • DSO (Digital Storage Oscilloscope) | A DSO is a basic digital oscilloscope with memory.
  • MSO (Mixed Signal Oscilloscope) | An MSO measures analog signals like any oscilloscope but also digital logic signals, often up to 16 channels (functioning as a logic analyzer).

Key criteria to consider when choosing an oscilloscope:

Number of channels: The number of channels on an oscilloscope corresponds to the number of signals that can be displayed simultaneously or independently. There are several types of channels that users must be familiar with before selecting an oscilloscope.

Bandwidth: Each input terminal on an oscilloscope is internally connected to a circuit known as an input amplifier, composed of various electronic components, each with its own frequency limitations. The quality and performance of these components determine the maximum frequency the oscilloscope can accurately capture, this defines its bandwidth.

Screen size: Screen size remains one of the most important factors when choosing an oscilloscope, as it is fundamentally a visual instrument. The size refers to the diagonal measurement of the display, expressed in inches. Depending on the model, users can configure display parameters and navigate through data either via front panel controls or a touchscreen interface.

Memory depth: Choosing memory depth can be more complex than it appears. Its management varies between manufacturers, especially in terms of how it impacts the sampling rate and, consequently, the accuracy and resolution of the signal capture.

Our selection of oscilloscopes, sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers, meets the full range of application requirements across education, research, higher education, electronic engineering, and industrial environments. A wide range of options and accessories are available to enhance your oscilloscope’s versatility. These include, for example: spectrum analyzers, protocol decoders, function generators, and logic analyzers.
