Polarization is a technique used to identify minerals in rocks. Some microscopes are specifically designed for this purpose and come equipped with two polarizing filters: the analyzer and the polarizer.
However, it is not always necessary to invest in a microscope dedicated solely to this use. You can adapt your biological microscope with various accessories to achieve excellent results. The principle remains the same: you need to add two polarizing filters to your microscope to observe minerals.
There are several possible configurations depending on your microscope model:
> The most affordable and simple solution is to use a set of Polaroid filters, placing one on the eyepiece and the other on the light source. While cost-effective, this method is less practical as the filters are simply placed on the microscope. > A more convenient option is an adapter kit with a filter for the light source and a clip-on polarizing filter for the eyepiece, ensuring better stability. > Jeulin also offers microscope stages equipped with filters, providing a fixed polarizer once installed.
Our DELio and Naja microscopes feature dedicated polarization systems, which can be adapted to biological microscopes, transforming them into geology microscopes.
If you own a Zeiss Primostar 3 microscope, you can also equip it for polarization by inserting the analyzer directly into the microscope head, ensuring consistent polarization for all observations.
