The retardation plate is made of an anisotropic material with two preferred axes called the fast axis and slow axis, which correspond to distinct refractive indices.
A wave entering such a material decomposes to propagate at two distinct speeds.
The thickness of the plate is defined so that the components are delayed by half a wavelength.
