Principles and objectives: In this option, a 1.55-micron laser is used to study the Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). The coupling of the pump source into the Erbium-doped fiber as well as the absorption and fluorescence properties are studied. A linear Erbium-doped fiber laser can be realized using a resonant mirror. By closing this cavity, it is also possible to construct a ring fiber laser! These two configurations can be studied with respect to parameters such as the length of the active fiber (4 lengths provided), the level of losses, the pump power, and so on. In this option, a 1.55-micron laser is used to study the Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA).
