LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3
Design scope: Three designers were tasked with creating an animal model. Ultimately, they had to choose between a crab and an elephant. The elephant's personality stole the show.
Personal connection: Animal models are often the most relatable and therefore the most enjoyable to create. A friendly competition among the designers to select the best animal made the design process engaging.
Building challenge: The designers anticipated that making the elephant move would pose a challenge. With only three motors available from the EV3 Core Set, their first decision was whether the elephant should be able to turn while walking or if its trunk should move up and down. The goal was to make the elephant appear lifelike and trumpeting! They first figured out a way for the trunk to move up and down. Then, by utilizing various mechanics but only one motor, they managed to make the elephant walk forward.
Programming challenge: This model incorporates the EV3 Intelligent Brick buttons as interactive features, which adds complexity to the programming. The touch sensor is used to control the trunk's position, while the color sensor is used to control the head's position.
Features: EV3 Color Sensor, Touch Sensor, one Medium Motor, two Large Motors
