Introduction:
Optical fibers, like all media that guide waves, have specific properties. The manipulations presented here aim to introduce students to two of these properties: numerical aperture and linear attenuation.
Numerical aperture was introduced through the acceptance angle (or critical angle of incidence) with the fiber model in previous manipulations. The goal here is to measure it experimentally on a real optical fiber.
Signal attenuation is highlighted by comparing the decrease in light intensity with the length of the optical fiber used.
