Opacity Measurement The covering power and the amount of paint used are important criteria for building paints. In other words:

- how many coats are needed to completely cover the surface?

- what is the amount of paint I will need?

Opacity is a measure of covering power:

Opacity (%) = YBLACK x 100 (%) YWHITE An opacity of 100% means that the covering is complete.

A measurement on a black substrate is no different from that on a white substrate.

Control Method A uniform film is applied to a white/black contrast card. When the layer has dried in the air, it can be objectively evaluated with the BYK-Gardner spectro-guide. The user is guided through the menu to perform the measurement, and the opacity value is automatically indicated in less than a second. The same method is used for transparent films and plastics.
