To perform your pH measurement, it is imperative to associate this electrode with a reference electrode (see Laboratory reference electrodes). The measuring electrode is the electrode that is sensitive to the pH of the solution. Indeed, the thin glass membrane present at the end is sensitive to the H+ ions in your sample. Separate measuring electrodes are recommended for applications where the pH electrode's lifespan is significantly shorter than that of the reference electrode.
