Free and damped mechanical oscillations lab with Data Acquisition System
Topics covered:
- Oscillation of a simple and heavy pendulum
- Free or damped oscillations
- Mechanical energy, potential and kinetic
Principles and objectives:
In this lab session, we will analyze energy transfers during a motion and practice an experimental approach to study the evolution of kinetic, potential, and mechanical energies of an oscillating system. Move the pendulum by about 10° and release it. The measurement of oscillations and synchronized video begin. We will plot curves representing the variations of Kinetic Energy Ec, Potential Energy Ep, and Mechanical Energy Em. Go to "Display", "Data Processing". From the angular velocity resulting from the derivative of the pendulum displacement angle, calculate the velocity at the mass level v=rω. Calculate the potential, kinetic energies, and the mechanical energy Em=Ec+Ep.
