Thermal Energy Transfer Experiment
Topics covered:
- Thermal conduction
- Thermal radiation
- Thermal resistance
- Insulation
Principles and objectives:
Set designed to highlight the phenomena of thermal transfer
through conduction and radiation as well as the insulating power
of different materials.
The device consists of a plastic case which
serves, in addition to its storage function, as an adiabatic enclosure for the
conducting of experiments. It contains 2 steel blocks and 2 aluminum blocks
of the same size as well as 2 threaded plastic rods
for handling the hot blocks. The metal blocks can accommodate
temperature probes of 3 or 6 mm in diameter.
The experiments consist of heating the different blocks to different initial temperatures (using a water bath not provided), and recording the evolution of their respective temperatures over time until reaching a steady state. And this under the following conditions:
- Blocks in contact with each other: conduction
- Blocks separated by a thin air gap: radiation and, to a lesser extent, convection
- Blocks separated by 3 types of insulating materials of the same thickness.
The analysis, more or less in-depth depending on the objective of the lab, is carried out with the Scientific Workshop software.
Comments:
This lab is an excellent qualitative and quantitative introduction to the study of the different modes of thermal transfer as well as insulation methods based on their thermal resistance.
