The Doppler effect is a well-known physical phenomenon used, for example, in the field of radars.
It is based on measuring a frequency shift between the emission and reception of a moving signal.

This complete kit allows for a simple and quantifiable experiment around this principle.
It consists of a motorized bench, an adjustment box, as well as an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver.

Thanks to its unique motorization system, the bench generates the movement of a carriage at a constant and adjustable speed.
The ultrasonic transmitter is placed on the mobile carriage facing the fixed part of the bench where the receiver is located.
The control box allows for managing all the elements, including:
- adjusting the speed of the mobile (from 4 to 14 cm.s-1)
- generating the 40 kHz ultrasonic signal from the transmitter
- directly obtaining the Doppler shift (frequency equal to the difference between the emitted and received frequencies).
It is then straightforward to find the speed of the mobile using theoretical formulas. This data can be compared to the speed of the carriage measured with an optical fork system.

To delve deeper, an analogy can be made with automotive radars. In this case, the transmitter and receiver are placed on the same side, and the moving mobile is equipped with a screen simulating the vehicle reflecting the ultrasonic signal.

Find detailed instructions for these experiments in the downloadable lab session under Resources and in the manual associated with reference 222 138.
