The Doppler effect, well known when a vehicle passes by a stationary observer, is quantifiable experimentally thanks to the Doppler Effect kit. The experiment involves measuring the frequency of a moving signal. The kit consists of a specific motorized mechanical bench and an Initio® unit. The mechanical bench generates a constant speed displacement. The speed of the mobile unit is controlled by a unit equipped with a speed controller, allowing for setting different speeds or manually generating a speed variation. This bench is designed to accommodate the Moduson® transmitter and receiver units, which are not included. The transmitter is placed on the mobile part of the bench: its movement is controlled and at a constant speed. The receiver, placed on the fixed part, allows for measuring the perceived frequency. An Initio® unit called "Doppler by Ultrasound" allows for deducing a signal with a frequency equal to the difference between the emitted and received frequencies: this is the Doppler shift. This information leads to determining the speed of the mobile unit. The mobile part has been designed to be used with an optical fork, allowing for comparing two velocimetry devices. For an analogy with automotive radars, the transmitter and receiver can be placed on the same side, and the moving unit is equipped with a screen to reflect the ultrasonic wave. Similarly, the frequency shift is deduced to conclude on the speed of the mobile unit. Discover the Doppler effect kit in the video:
