IPL - Helmet with Michelson software
The Immersive Photonics Lab (IPL) is a Virtual Reality application dedicated to training in photonics, which faithfully reproduces physical phenomena and effectively develops procedural skills. It emulates the optical and laser equipment necessary to train students, anywhere, anytime, and without the risk of injury.
The goal of this lab session is to learn how to adjust a pre-assembled Michelson interferometer using a monochromatic source.
â–ª Level 1: Understand the principle of the Michelson interferometer. Understand the role of the different components in the setup. Interpret an interference pattern set in air wedge. Know how to find the flat fringe (optical contact) when the Michelson is set in air wedge.
â–ª Level 2: Interpret an interference pattern in air wedge. Know how to switch from an air wedge setting to an air gap setting.
â–ª Level 3: Know how to return to the optical contact of an uncalibrated Michelson interferometer.
The Michelson version includes 3 guided levels step-by-step. The learner begins the lab session by discovering the setup and the components that make it up: the Michelson.
They are guided to understand the effects on the interference pattern when the Michelson is set in air wedge or air gap. At the end of the lab session, they are then able to adjust a Michelson-type setup using a laser source, by manipulating the translation and rotation of the mirrors. Throughout the different stages, the learner is also made aware of the dangers related to lasers.
A sandbox mode allows them to apply the knowledge gained to design and align their own setup.
