IPL - Michelson Software
Immersive Photonics Lab

The Immersive Photonics Lab (IPL) is a Virtual Reality application dedicated to photonics training, faithfully reproducing physical phenomena and effectively developing procedural skills. It emulates the optical and laser equipment necessary to train students, anywhere, anytime, and without the risk of injury.
The purpose of this lab session is to learn how to adjust an already assembled Michelson interferometer using a monochromatic source.
â–ª Level 1: Understand the principle of the Michelson interferometer.Understand the role of different components in the setup.Interpret an interference pattern set in an air gap.Know how to find the flat tint (optical contact) when the Michelson is set with an air gap.
â–ª Level 2: Interpret an interference pattern in an air wedge.Know how to switch from an air wedge setup to an air gap setup.
â–ª Level 3: Know how to return to optical contact in a misaligned Michelson interferometer.
The Michelson version consists of 3 levels guided step by step. The learner starts the lab session by discovering the setup and its components: the Michelson.
They are guided to understand the effects on the interference pattern when the Michelson is set with an air gap or an air wedge. At the end of the lab session, they are then able to adjust a Michelson-type setup using a laser source, by adjusting the translation and rotation of mirrors.
Throughout the different stages, the learner is also made aware of the risks associated with lasers.
A Sandbox mode allows them to apply the acquired knowledge to design and align their own setup.
