Experiment Silica Optical Fiber Installation

This educational kit includes all the mechanical, optical, and electronic components required to understand fiber optic communication technology, which is essential nowadays. Similar to the plastic optical fiber practical work, the emphasis is on fiber preparation by the user who learns the correct handling of stripping and cleaving tools. The single-mode laser diode control unit allows for power adjustment, diode modulation, and amplification of the signal from the photodiode. Themes covered: - Handling and preparation of silica fibers - Light guidance in single-mode and multimode fibers - Numerical aperture and acceptance angle of a fiber - Study of modulable laser diode characteristics - Transmission speed and loss study - Determination of fiber length or index Principles and objectives: This set, supplied with a kilometer of single-mode and multimode fiber, is designed to introduce the theory and manipulation of silica fibers. The user starts by preparing the fiber ends through stripping and cleaving with appropriate tools, then studies laser light coupling into a bare fiber. The light coupled into the fiber comes from a single-mode laser diode with adjustable and modulable power. Fiber parameters such as acceptance angle, numerical aperture, transmission speed, and transmission losses are measured.
