This option of Experiment 204831 allows to address the concepts related to pulses and associated powers with a pulsed laser diode and a suitable detector. Themes covered: - Measurement of the average power of a pulsed laser source - Measurement of pulse width and repetition rate - Peak power and energy of a laser pulse Principles and objectives: The power of an electromagnetic radiation (or light flux) corresponds to the amount of energy emitted by the source in one second, while the light intensity (or irradiance) relates power and unit of surface. Therefore, at constant power, the intensity of a light source can vary depending on the geometric parameters of the beam. To demonstrate these relationships and verify them quantitatively, the experimental setup uses two light sources with very different geometric beam shapes. Power and intensity measurements are carried out with a wattmeter, and an adjustable iris diaphragm allows the variation of the beam section. In addition (204831), a light source (laser diode) with nanosecond pulses and a fast detector allow studying other characteristics such as average power, peak power, pulse width, and repetition rate.
