Topics covered:
- Malus' Law
- Wave delay
- Production and analysis of polarized light
- Liquid Crystal Display
Principles and objectives:
The acronym LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display and refers to a liquid crystal screen.
It is easy to act on the structure of liquid crystals, especially by applying an electric field. The alignment of the liquid crystal molecules is then constrained, which has the effect of modifying its optical properties, particularly its polarization. The operating principle is simple: in the absence of an electric field, the molecules naturally orient themselves (twist effect) and the substance will be perfectly transparent. Conversely, the action of an electric field creates a modification of the medium and the substance darkens.
