The presence of 2 to 4% of Neanderthal genome in the nuclear genome of Eurasian humans attests to the encounter and interbreeding between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. A study of blood groups carried out using Neanderthal DNA provides new evidence that supports scenarios explaining the extinction of the Neanderthal man.

This lab practical highlights specific alleles of human blood groups (RhD) through DNA electrophoresis. Through a comparative analysis, the results provide information on the evolution of Neanderthals and interbreeding with Homo sapiens. It reinforces the hypothesis that low genetic diversity and low reproductive success contributed to the disappearance of Neanderthals.
