The Comparative Proteomics Kit I: Protein Profiling is the first module of an experiment to study protein analysis in the laboratory. Principle: In this experiment, students use the technique of SDS-PAGE polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to generate protein profiles from the muscles of distantly and closely related fish species. Based on their results, they compare the profiles of different species to test the hypothesis that protein profiles can be indicators of evolutionary relatedness. By constructing cladograms (phylogenetic trees) and assigning a branch to each organism, students can decide if their results confirm their predictions. Duration of the lab: 3 sessions of 45 minutes Format for 32 students: 8 stations (4 students per station) Storage duration: 12 months

The kit consists of:
- 30 ml Laemmli sample buffer
- 50 µl Pre-stained protein standards Kaleidoscope™
- 1 L Tris-Glycine-SDS electrophoresis buffer 10x
- 2 x 100 ml Bio-Safeâ„¢ Coomassie protein dye
- 500 µg Lyophilized actin and myosin standard
- 0.3 g Dithiothreitol (DTT)
- 1 rack of 96 (200 µl) Prot/Elect™ pipette tips
- 60 1.5 ml flip-cap microtubes
- 50 1.5 ml screw-cap microtubes
- 30 Disposable plastic transfer pipettes
- 1 Instruction manual
