Separating funnel

The separatory funnel is a laboratory glassware used to separate two immiscible liquids through decantation. It has a distinctive shape, resembling a funnel topped with a hemisphere and ending in a neck sealed with a stopper. A narrow tube extends from the funnel and is equipped with a stopcock at its lower end. During decantation, the denser liquid (lower phase) settles beneath the less dense liquid (upper phase).

Here are some common uses of a separatory funnel: liquid separation, component extraction, purification, or simply observing phase separation in a mixture.

A separatory funnel, often made of borosilicate glass, is used in three main steps:

> Adding the liquid into the funnel

> Allowing the liquids to separate

> Collecting the lower phase using the stopcock
